Carbon offsets are credits purchased to compensate for emissions by funding equivalent greenhouse gas reduction or removal projects, such as reforestation, renewable energy, or methane capture. Each offset credit represents one metric ton of CO₂ avoided or removed. Offset projects must meet standards for additionality, permanence, and verification to ensure their credibility and effectiveness in reducing global emissions.
