Permafrost
Permafrost is permanently frozen ground found in polar and subpolar regions. As temperatures rise, permafrost thaw releases stored greenhouse gases, including CO₂ and methane, into the atmosphere, amplifying global warming. Permafrost melt also disrupts ecosystems and infrastructure in affected regions.
